An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that safety is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Defence Background

The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport usage to communication practices.
